The African culture is one of the bases of Brazilian culture and is also quite present in the life of the city of São Paulo. Its manifestations are everywhere and greatly enrich the local culture with its beautiful rhythms, beliefs and practices that enhance the diversity of the capital. The United Nations (UN) established 2011 as the International Year of African Descent and the Municipality of São Paulo has greatly invested to enhance the richness of these traditions. Therefore, in partnership with the Coordinator of the Black Population Affairs (“CONE”), SPTuris created this tour that aims to rescue the history of African descent in the city by encouraging visits of tourist attractions in reference to this vast and wonderful culture. Taking this opportunity, the Mayor of São Paulo, Gilberto Kassab, signed on 10/25/2011 the Decree-Law 52.743, which regulates the creation of the official tour of African culture. Some of the key figures in Brazilian or African descent who fought alongside African descendants had a prominent role in the trajectory of São Paulo and forever changed the city’s history. Meet some of them:
• Luiz Gama: Advocate of the Slaves. It was one of the most respected and feared lawyers (feared by the enslavers) of the nineteenth century in the province of São Paulo;
• Tebas: the slave. He originated the expression “being Tebas.” In Paulicéia, it meaned to be “entrepreneurial, skilled, capable of anything to do with accuracy and perfection,” says historian Affonso A. de Freitas in “Reminiscências Paulistanas” of 1921;
• Father Antônio Aparecido da Silva: patriarch of the Afro-Brazilian church ministry;
• Father Batista, as he was known, Father Benedito Batista Laurindo, one of the pioneers in the work of pastoral care of the minor, in the city center.
