The famous Paulista Avenue became the greatest icon of the city. As one of the most important points, its splendor makes São Paulo different from any other city in the world.
It is difficult to imagine that in 1782 it was a huge forest named Caaguaçu (“huge forest” in Tupi) by native Indians. Old road ‘Real Grandeza’ crossed the Capão farm, creating a short track. When Uruguayan engineer Joaquim Eugênio Borges, together with two partners, bought this area and started to urbanize it in an innovative way, creating large residential parcels. On December 8, 1891, the first paved road was opened. At that time, population in São Paulo was less than 100,000 inhabitants.
In 1892, Villon Park was opened following a development in the area. Years later, this park changed its name to Siqueira Campos and then to Trianon, until today. Its green area is part of Mata Atlântica forest and presents native species. There are several sculptures spread over the park.
In 1903, Pasteur Institute was found by some entrepreneurs of São Paulo. This institute researches rabies virus; since the beginning it is housed in the same building. The first private hospital in the city, Santa Catarina Asylum, was built in 1906, today, one of the largest hospital complexes in the world.
During the 50s, several houses had been replaced by commercial buildings. Conjunto Nacional, opened in 1956, is one of the modern architecture milestones.
This region brought several investments due to its excellent location and infrastructure, Making Paulista Avenue the largest business center in Latin America. Due to the high number of companies, banks and hotels, several business tourists come and go every day.
Additionally to its economic talent, a rich cultural program is also provided. Masp (Museum of Modern Art Assis Chateaubriand), opened in 1968, houses the most significant collection of Western art in Latin countries. In 1953, Casa das Rosas (House of the Roses) was designed by Ramos de Azevedo according to French Classicism. Today the art gallery is under national trust due to its historic value. Such important cultural points and many other cinemas, theaters, cultural centers and cafés give you a walk full of options. People coming and going along its whole 2.8 km extension on foot, by subway or bus, also find restaurants and snack bars and have the opportunity to see wonderful buildings and works.
The Association “Paulista Viva” (Live Paulista) was created in late 80s in order to keep and maintain the image of this symbol of São Paulo and also improve life quality of all.
