Luz Station

Open to public on March 01, 1901, Luz Station lays on 7.500 m² in Luz Garden, where structures from England copying Big Ben and Westminster Abbey are. There was no opening celebration, due to the traffic being replaced little by little, but soon this new milestone became a visit’s room in São Paulo. All famous personalities coming to São Paulo had to disembark there. Businesspeople, intellectuals, politicians, diplomatist and kings were received in the lobby and that is where they used to say farewell.

This station became an entrance door also for immigrants, upgrading the small town to this important metropolis. This importance given to São Paulo Railway Station, as it was officially known, last until the end of the Second World War. After that, railway transportation had been replaced by planes, buses and cars, much faster than trains.

In 1946, Luz building was partially destroyed during a fire. Government supported this rebuilding and in 1951 Luz Station was finally reopened. There were also other restoration and rebuilding. In 1982, the architectonic complex of Luz Station was protected by the Council of Historical, Artistic, Archeological and Tourist Asset (Condephaat).
